To help address this, Volusia County — supported by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) — created a grant program that helps homeowners upgrade outdated septic systems.

Grant amounts are tiered based on the system type:

Up to $14,000 for an aerobic treatment unit (ATU) certified to reduce nitrogen.
Up to $8,000 for an in-ground nitrogen-reducing biofilter (INRB).

Funds are paid directly to approved contractors like Acme Environmental, simplifying the process for homeowners and ensuring projects are completed to county standards.

Not every property qualifies for the program. To be eligible, your home must meet specific requirements:

Location – The property must be in the DeLeon Springs Priority Focus Area (PFA).
Lot type – Eligible properties include single-family homes, two-family residences, mobile homes, or nonprofit-owned sites.
System condition – You must currently have a conventional septic system that can be upgraded to an ENR system.
